It actually sounds kind of gross, but BARF is an acronym for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or Bones and Raw Food. Many health conscious veterinarians are huge advocates for this diet which can completely replace commercially prepared dog food. One of the first proponents of the BARF diet was Dr. Ian Billinghurst who still recommends it today. He believes that it is the ultimate way to get our pets in to optimum health. Many people believe that the BARF diet simulates what your dog would eat in his natural environment.
Many people feel that there are a lot of health advantages to feeding a raw food diet. Many owners who have dogs with problems such as allergies, skin problems, weight problems, and anal gland problems have found that the bones and raw food diet has helped to significantly remedy these issues.
Some of the advantages to feeding a biologically appropriate raw food diet include no consumption of preservatives found in most commercially prepared kibble diets, it usually tastes better to your dog than regular dog food, and in general, muscle mass and body condition improve on a raw food diet. One also often finds that dogs produce fewer stools, eat more slowly, and have fewer health problems. Many advocates of the raw food diet also claim that it is less expensive than commercially manufactured dog food. One of the biggest disadvantages to this diet is that it takes longer to prepare.
If you want your dog not to develop the habit of jumping on people, it is advisable that it is subjected to puppy training. A puppy as young as a week old can already be subjected to training.
A pet owner should make an outline of a dog behavior program to stop from constantly jumping on people. Try to determine if the dog is getting mixed signals from its behaviour. If the dog jumps and it is given a pat, hug or even a treat, the animal will get the idea that this action is good and will always lead to rewards.
The first thing to do is stop giving rewards or show positive gestures when the dog is jumping. Read the rest of this entry »
Some Labrador dogs are unfortunate enough to have been born with a disease. Surely you do not want to acquire disease even before you were born, am I right? But then, things happen whether we want it or not. We inherit things we sometimes don't want to have, things such as horrid characteristics and diseases.
Dogs, same with human will less likely choose to inherit diseases if only they have the opportunity and power to do it. But sad to say, these diseases are passed on from generations to generations and there's no way we can escape it when it's already running through the veins of our ancestors. As dog owners, it is your responsibility to know what these diseases are so that you could prevent it from coming before actually affecting your dog. A dog may suffer from what it seems to be a mild deafness to eye problem and may get as worst as dysplasia, luxating patella and hereditary myopathy. Read the rest of this entry »
Pet-owners have a certain attachment with their pets which makes it agonizing for them to see their pets, whether it is a dog or cat or both exhibiting signs of pain. Restricted mobility coupled with increasing lethargy are manifestations of arthritis in pets. Pet-owners who have experienced or who are experiencing arthritis joint pain empathize with pets suffering from arthritis.
Fortunately, these identified signs are just mild consequences of arthritis in pets and can be addressed. Arthritis that is ignored and has progressed is detrimental to your once vigorous Labrador or Persian as it can cause permanent immobility. If you are a concerned pet-owner and are looking for a way to save your pet from future agonies, here are some tips you may want to follow.

The time has come to have a bit of fun with your pet. You step out the door, unhook the leash and throw a tennis ball to the other end of the yard… And your dog looks up at you like you just lost your mind. What went wrong? Looks like its time to head back to the training ground for Fetch lessons.
Fetch is a simple command and is taught easily to puppies but is not beyond the grasp of older dogs as well. In this simple form of a rudimentary game, fetch is primarily used as an entertainment with a primary purpose of creating bonding time between dog and trainer. In more advanced forms, it is used in police dog training for such things as weapon recovery and drug location. So how do we go about teaching this behavior .
The Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog breed in the United States so there are lots of good things to say about them. They will do ok in an apartment as long as they can be walked frequently. They do like lots of exercise. If it is possible for them to experience water occasionally, so much the better as they have a water resistant coat and love to swim. A properly fenced in yard is best for them. They love people and do well with other dogs and pets, especially if socialized early. They can be good watch dogs. They need to be part of a human family so please do not neglect that requirement or they can become destructive. They are great with children. As a reminder, never leave a child unsupervised with a puppy or dog. Read the rest of this entry »

The ownership of dogs in general comes with its own set of challenges; a family must make way for a new resident in their home – a resident whose care can feel initially overwhelming to those who have not owned dogs in the past. Officials seek owners of rescued Labrador retriever
LAKE CONROE – Lady Luck was with a yellow Labrador retriever rescued from Lake Conroe last week. Local law enforcement officials hope that good fortune continues and they are able to return the animal to its owner.
Officers with Constable Don Chumley’s Precinct 1 Marine Division, responding to resident calls in the Diamond Head area about a dog in Lake Conroe, were able to save the 8- to 10-month-old Labrador retriever after the animal had spent nearly four hours in the water last Thursday.
“It took a while to find the animal since only the head was above water,” said Lt. Bryan DuBose, who, along with Deputy Wayne McCaffrey, rescued the animal. “She was distressed, exhausted and dehydrated.”
Unable to exit the lake because of bulkheading, the animal had dog-paddled for several hours. When the rescue boat arrived, the dog was standing on its back feet holding its head above more than three feet of water.
“We’re fortunate to have several K-9 certified handlers on staff,” said DuBose. “We were able to warm and re-hydrate the dog throughout the night and then have her checked out by a vet.”
