Central Michigan Labrador Rescue Network

Central Michigan Labrador Rescue Network, Inc. (CMLRN)

The Central Michigan Labrador Rescue Network is a small group of people that are passionate about the Labrador Retriever. They will work tirelessly to try and make a difference to homeless and forgotten Labs, one dog at a time.

While they are based in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, they work with our fellow rescuer friends nation-wide through the power of the internet, referrals and phone calls. They will try and place dogs where there are willing people to home these grateful dogs.

All dogs are completely vetted (altered, microchipped, vaccinations, etc.), socialized, and exposed to basic training prior to adoption.

Gary Gator Tuffies Dog Toy Review

If you are like us, you have probably spent a small fortune on chew toys for your labrador retriever dog. I can’t even begin to tell you how many different types of toys we have brought into the house, only to see them chewed to pieces in less than a day or two.

Our Cooper is a real aggressive chewer. For Christmas this year we picked up something a little different from ropes or kongs. The toy we found is Gary Gator and is made by Tuffies. He is a cute little alligator about 18 inches long with three squeakers. It’s now February and Gary is still alive and kicking.

He just lost his head today and that is after two months of constant chewing and tugging. Not bad for a labrador retriever that has shredded every other toy he has gotten his teeth on. Although they say it’s not a chew toy on their website it certainly has withstood some aggressive chewing.

Tuffies also has a full line of rings, dinosaurs, sea creatures and a tug of war toy. They have something for every type of chewer. You can see their products at Sit Stay, a website that has been selling quality dog products and supplies since 1996.

Purple Ear Solution Dog Ear Infections

It was a mild Saturday in January and my dog Cooper and I were off to our weekly outdoor training course. The training took place on a high school football field which was located near a river that flows through the middle of our city. Of course, as any of you know keeping a Labrador retriever dog out of the water even in January is a hard thing to do.  As with every Saturday over an eight week period I fished Cooper out and dried him off.

A week or so after the last training course was finished I noticed that Cooper was scratching his left ear constantly. It looked like he was very uncomfortable. When examining his ear we noticed that there was allot of "brown gunk" inside it and the smell coming from it was terrible. We took Cooper to the Vet for a check up and she confirmed that he had an ear infection. It was obvious that the infection had come from the water that he was swimming in every Saturday. We purchased a bottle of a commercial brand solution which was to clear his ear infection up.

Does Your Dog Have Heartworms?

There are few signs of a heartworm infection until severe damage has already occurred. Furthermore, a heartworm infection is fatal if untreated. The difficulty of diagnosis and risk of serious health problems are a dangerous combination. Learn more about heartworm prevention, detection, and treatment here.

Unlike other kinds of worms, heartworms do not infect your dog's intestines. Instead, microscopic heartworm larvae reside in the blood, and adult heartworms move primarily to the heart and lung arteries, and less frequently, in the liver. Heartworm larvae are transmitted by mosquitoes. After being bitten by an infected mosquito, the larvae will live in the blood. Maturation to an adult heartworm takes about six months. An adult heartworm, up to one foot long, can live for several years and release thousands of young larvae a day.

Labrador Friends of the South

Labrador Friends of the South (LFS) is an incorporated, non-profit organization and is dedicated to the rescue and placement of homeless Labrador Retrievers. They also promote the educational aspects of rescue within their communities as it relates to the ethical treatment of dogs and the importance of spaying/neutering to reduce the numbers of unwanted animals. Based in Metro Atlanta, they are active in the entire Southeastern region including Alabama, Florida, Tennessee and the Carolinas.

LFS relies solely on donations, fundraising events and adoption fees to function and continue saving and placing homeless Labradors. LFS is an all volunteer organization of people who give their time, effort, and love for labs to protect and save them from the perils of pet over-population and irresponsible pet ownership.
