Cooper the Snow Dog

Labrador Retriever Blog | January 29th, 2009

I know I never post enough pictures of Cooper but I had to snap this one the other day. Why do labrador retrievers love the snow so much? Every chance he gets he bolts for the cedars so he can scratch his back on the fence that is on the othe side of them. Here is what a chocolate labrador retriever covered in snow looks like.

Dog on a Treadmill?

Labrador Retriever Blog | January 29th, 2009

It's been one solid week of getting into better shape. Walking the dog has been a little harder that what I thought. It has been minus twenty to minus thirty out and that makes it a little tough to get out and do a big walk. I have been playing with an elliptical that I borrowed from a friend and I am thinking of getting an treadmill. I think Cooper would love to get on one and stretch out on those really cold days when we can't go for a big walk. I wonder how many other people have their dogs on a treadmill. If you do mail me the pictures and I will gladly post them for you.

Picking the Right Dog Food

Labrador Retriever Blog | January 24th, 2009

Choosing the right dog food for your pet is never an easy decision. Just this week a person I know switched the food they were or are buying for her dogs and it didn't turn out so hot. The dogs reacted very badly to the new food. When you are shopping for a new food you might be tempted to treat it like shopping for cheap diet pills. This is something that you should not do. Do your research on dog foods. Read reviews and talk to your vet about the benefits and drawbacks of different dog food brands. Talk other pet owners that you know and see what they are feeding their dogs. Remember though that pets are like humans and because one dog does well on a food it doesn't mean that yours will. Dogs can get food allergies much like we do.

Loving the Snow

Labrador Retriever Blog | January 24th, 2009
All of you labrador retriever owners will love these pictures. My lab loves the snow so when I saw this posted on the labrador retriever picture forums I thought I would share.

Jack absolutely loves the snow! He will make it a point to run through the deepest parts, bury his ball and then dig it out of the snow. Still snowing in Ohio. Jack is standing up in the pictures.

Cleaning Up The Dog Toys

Labrador Retriever Blog | January 24th, 2009

I hadn't noticed just how much stuff we have for the dog laying around the house and stuffed into closets and drawers. There are enough toys and dog supplies in the house to fill one of those shipping boxes that you see at work. So that is exactly what we did this week. We grabbed some cardboard storage boxes and began to put everything for the dog in one place. It helps alleviate some of the clutter and now we know where everything is is we need it. We have organized all of leashes and collars, sprays, paperwork, extra toys and medical supplies into one spot and tucked it away for safe keeping.

Even Labrador Retrievers Can Get Hurt

Labrador Retriever Blog | January 18th, 2009

The other day I saw a commercial on television with Erin Brockovich. It was about health cases involving Mesothelioma which is a type of cancer related to asbestos exposure. It reminded me that I should blog about what happened to Cooper last week. He is getting a little older but still likes to rough house it a bit. He jumped off of the front porch and into the snow bank last Sunday afternoon. Well later on in the day it became apparent to us that maybe he pulled something because he was having a hard time getting up and down stairs and onto the couch.

Dogs are a lot like us, they can get minor and major sprains and strains from doing vigorous activity. We didn’t panic and rush him to the vet but instead just gave home TLC and made sure he didn’t over extend himself for a couple of days. It took him a few days but now he is back to normal and the crazy labrador retriever he is. Even these seemingly industructable dogs can get hurt so you have to keep your eye on them.

The Labrador Exerciser

Labrador Retriever Blog | January 18th, 2009

Are there any better weight loss products than owning a labrador retriever? Lately I have been working out a bit at home but taking the dog for a nice brisk walk certainly does the trick. I have been reading that just a 20 minute walk a day is a great way to jumpstart a weight loss program. Whether you know or it not you have a pretty good piece of work out equipment at your disposal. You labrador retriever loves a good walk so take him or her up on their offer and watch yourself slowly get into shape. There was  recent conversation on the forums regarding this and I pointed out my other half has dropped off nearly forty pounds just by walking the dog.

Labrador Retriever Training Books

Labrador Retriever Blog | January 18th, 2009

When we first brought Cooper home we picked up a book on labrador retrievers to help as a guide to what we could expect as proud new labrador retriever owners. There are many excellent Amazon books that you can find to help you with training or just understanding your new pet. Many of the members of the labrador retriever chatboard have been recommending different titles that have helped them.

If you are interested some of the titles include The Art of Raising A Puppy, Training Your Labrador Retriever and Your Labs Life. All of them have high ratings from forum members. Those are a few good titles to start with if you are in need of some training information or interested in learning about your labrador retriever puppy.

Marley and You: A Labrador Retriever Is A Long-Term Commitment

Marley & You: Getting A Labrador Retriever Is A Long-Term Commitment
Hartford Courant, United States - Jan 9, 2009

Though "Marley & Me" is a hit, the American Kennel Club would like to remind moviegoers about the importance of making careful, educated decisions when considering adding a dog to their family.

Distributed by Twentieth Century Fox, "Marley & Me" is the big-screen adaptation the best-selling book by John Grogan. After bringing home an adorable Labrador Retriever puppy named Marley, Grogan ( Owen Wilson) and wife Jenny ( Jennifer Aniston), learn that a cute puppy can quickly turn into a rambunctious 100-pound bundle of energy.

"It's no wonder that the Labrador Retriever has been America's top dog and ideal family pet for so long," said AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. "Labs are a versatile, intelligent and energetic breed but without early socialization, obedience training and proper exercise for their energy level they can become bored and develop behavioral problems. Regardless of breed, all potential dog owners need to realize that ownership will be a 10-to-15-year commitment for the life of the dog."

Labradors have been the most popular breed in the U.S. for the past 17 years, according to 2007 American Kennel Club registration statistics. The AKC urges dog lovers who are thinking about getting a Labrador Retriever to examine how the breed will fit into their own environment and to consider all of the 161 breeds recognized by the AKC and choose the fit that is best for their lifestyle.
