The Best Training For Your Labrador Retriever

Labrador Retriever Blog | May 25th, 2009

If you have a labrador retriever puppy then you have probably thought once or twice about how to get them trained properly. It didn't take us long to look into training classes. But finding the perfect trainer is a lot like asking what is the best dog food on the market, who makes the best car or who what is the most effective diet pill. It's one of those questions that you are going to have a hard time to find the answer to. There are many sources for dog training such as chat forums, ebooks, your phone book and from recomendations from friends and family.

You should be doing lots of research when finding a good trainer. We went with a person that specialized in labrador retrievers. He owned two of the best behaved dogs I have ever seen in my life. He also let me watch a couple of classes and gave me references to check up on.

Don't jump at the first trainer you find, do a little digging and ask other dog friends if they would go with that person.

Labrador Retriever in Bath Tub

Labrador Retriever Blog | May 20th, 2009

How much does your labrador retriever love the bath tub? As you can see from this picture that was recently posted at the labrador retriever forums most labs love it quite a bit. When we first brought Cooper home we couldn't keep him out of the tub. He would jump in there and be licking the Grohe faucets like he was waiting for more water to come out. Remember your labrador retriever only needs to be bathed a couple of times a year unless they get into something they shouldn't have. They have special oils in their coats which can erode if they are exposed to too much shampoo.

Training Your Dog Not to Steal Things

Labrador Retriever Blog | May 18th, 2009

I can't believe how many things that I have read over the years that peoples labrador retrievers have taken and chewed apart.  There have been countless stories about shoes, socks, remote controls and even taking lingerie and destroying it. Tonight we had company over with a small child. They just set their bag of toys and stuffed animals on the floor.

Knowing what was going to happen next I picked up the bag and moved it to another room and closed the door. No harm, no foul. By taking those items and moving them away I saved a situation from happening. If you don't give him a chance to steal something, there will be nothing there to steal.

May 2009 Photo Contest

Labrador Retriever Blog | May 15th, 2009
April's winner, divaskid, has chosen the theme of: "I beg of you!" (show us those sad eyes) for May's contest. Here is a great shot she provided as an example:

Time to see your lab's pleadings! Oh, the drama! Beg for treats? A walk? A toy? Tennis ball? To come in? Go out? A swim? Whatever it is, capture it in a shot and submit it at the labrador retriever forums.

The winner of the May contest will choose the theme for June and also receive a collar with a heavy duty black, plastic buckle from one of our photo contest sponsors, www.3dirtydawgz.com.

The 2nd place winner will choose a sticker from our other sponsor, www.stickerfoundry.com. In the event of a tie for 2nd place, the first picture posted by the 2nd place person(s) chronologically will be the winner.

Update on Cooper and I

Labrador Retriever Blog | May 13th, 2009

I have had a few computer issues as of late and apologize for being slow on blog updates. My desktop caught a terrible virus but I was able to fix it after a lot of work. We do have a notebook which is a bit older and is dire need of some extra notebook memory.

This is also the time of year when Cooper and I find ourselves outside getting yardwork done and enjoying the nice weather. It's finally so nice to be outside and getting some much need yardwork done. Cooper is really enjoying the sunny weather and there is dog hair everywhere.

I promise to take some pictures and post them. I finally figured out how to work my cell phone camera.

Nice Weather to Walk the Dog

Labrador Retriever Blog | May 7th, 2009

Is everybody finally starting to enjoy the nice spring weather? It finally looks like the rains are going to subside and we are getting some great sunny days. If you haven't taken part in the daily walking of your dog it's a great time to start so you both get some exercise. It's nice to use the old elliptical all winter and on rainy days but trust me once you get out in your neighbourhood walking your dog you will enjoy it to no end. It's a great way to get some exercise, a nice way to see your neighbourhood and an excellent way to bond with your furry best friend. My wife is the one who normally walks Cooper every day but as of late I have been tagging along and it's a nice mental health holiday to just take a short walk around the block or in our local park.

Dog and Elephant Best Friend Video

Labrador Retriever Blog | May 5th, 2009

A friend sent this to me yesterday. The news story gets kind of cheesy at the end but it's a pretty good story. In this latest installment of CBS News Assignment America, Steve Hartman visits an animal sanctuary where a dog and an elephant have formed a very lasting, and unusual, friendship.
