Labrador Retriever Runs for Mayor

FAIRHOPE, Ala. - One of the candidates in the race to become Fairhope's next mayor is considerably more hairy than the rest. He also has twice as many legs and a constantly wagging tail. Wille Bean Roscoe P. Coltrane is a 7-year-old yellow Labrador retriever whose owner has taken a satirical poke at politics by launching the pooch into the race.

But Willie Bean may not be up for that rough-and-tumble world.

"When a little dog barks at him, he cringes and he runs away," owner Tress Turner told the Press-Register in a story Sunday.

Turner, 43, manages The Coffee Loft, which is also the dog's campaign headquarters where supporters can purchase T-shirts and yard signs.

Do You Know Your Dog Laws?

Over the past few years it seems that many municipalities or cites have been radically altering the dog and pet laws. The news laws range from out wide bans of certain breeds, dog licenses, muzzle and leash laws. While we may not always agree with certain laws all the time it's important to stay on top of them and be informed to protect yourself from any legality. The last things that we as pet or dog owners want to do is pay a fine for not having our dog on a leash or have to hire a team of Chicago personal injury lawyers because of a lawsuit. Remember, you can always challenge dog laws that you don’t agree with by writing your politicians or signing petitions. Not abiding by them leaves you in a world of trouble.

Is Your Lab Just Being a Lab?

I see more people asking the same type of behavioral questions about their labrador retriever puppies. My lab puppy is stealing my shoes, chewing everything in sight, eating everyting is site and even once where their puppy was in the habit of stealing a disposable diaper when given the chance. Many times people think that their labrador retriever puppy has behavioral issues or is being a bad puppy.

For the most part they are just being normal labrador retriever puppies. They are highly energetic, aggressive chewers for the better part of their lives and from what I have found nosey or very into exploring their surroundings. Of course you want to correct any outrageous behavior with positive reinforcement but don’t get too worried when they are young. Sometimes it’s all part of just being a labrador retriever puppy.

You Cant Keep A Lab Out of Water

It was one of those moments I wish I had a camera but I didn't. Our neighbourhood is undergoing a water restoration. All of the houses are having their pipes from the road replaced which means their are hoses everywhere piping the water into the houses from main on the street. The result is that there is water everywhere during the day on the streets. Try taking your labrador retriever for a walk with pools of water everywhere in the street. I took Cooper around the block to mail some birthday invitations and we couldn't go two seconds without Cooper laying down and splashing around in the water. It must have been a paradise for him. What are some odd places your labrador retriever has gone for a swim?

One Sick Puppy Helps PAWS

White Sox fan Kelly Mrozek, of Homer Glen, and Holiday, her 12-year-old Labrador retriever.

The tickets for Thursday's event gave two people and one dog the chance to enjoy the festivities, including the pregame "pup rally" parade.

"To me, it's like the best of everything. I mean I love being with my dog, and I love the White Sox - to me it seemed like it would be a blast," the Homer Glen resident said.

However, her date, her 12-year-old black Labrador retriever named Holiday, fell ill. Not wanting the tickets to go to waste, Mrozek decided to raffle them off. The tickets cost $80, but Mrozek got $180 for them in the raffle.

Mrozek donated the proceeds to a fellow animal lover and friend Ruby Wilson, who is a volunteer humane investigator with the PAWS animal shelter in Tinley Park. "I just know that she's really into animals and a proponent for dogs and has a really good heart," Mrozek said.

Drug Sniffing Dogs Cloned in Korea

Drug-Sniffing Dogs Cloned in KoreaA good looking group of yellow labrador retrievers wouldn't you say? They should be, news sources this week report that they are cloned. "The Korean Customs Service today unveiled seven golden Labrador retrievers cloned from a skilled drug-sniffing canine in active service—a test to see if duplicates could reduce the difficulty and expense of finding dogs qualified to detect drugs and explosives, officials say." Although we both now they aren't golden labs but yellow labs we will let it slide. So far all seven have passed their first test to determine if they can make the cut as drug sniffing dogs.

Forget kids, Pets Are Obese Too

This is an article of interest for both pet owners and their pets. It cites that pet obesity is up nearly 40% and that is alarming for not only our pets but us as well. Why? Because there is a direct corelation between obese pets and obese or over weight pet owners. "Pet obesity leads to diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hip dysplasia, back and joint pain, endocrine diseases and, at an advanced stage, becomes a tricky affair for the vet to work around. "
