Deskunking a Dog
Last night old Cooper got sprayed by a skunk. He has three distinct wet, oily spray marks along his side and boy did he smell something awful. I was out and my wife called me on my cell phone to ask what to do. The smell was so bad she was gagging over the phone. I was at my friends house and thankfully he had his laptop handy so I could search for a solution. There seems to be a few schools of thought on how to deskunk your dog.
The first solution to getting the skunk smell out of your dog is good old fashioned tomato juice. This is what my wife used last night and it worked pretty good. There was a little odor to Cooper this morning but it was faint at best. Soak your dog in the juice and let it sit for a bit on him. Like a conditioner shampoo. If you have a dog and skunks are active in your area I would suggest keeping can on hand for emergencies.
A second way to deskunk your dog is to buy a commercial deskunking shampoo or mixture. We just went out this morning and bought a bottle to get rid of the last bit of smell from his coat. I have read from others on the net that they work as well. You just have to ask your vet or local pet supply store which item is best.
The third way involves making your own formula. Remember to make this in an open container and do not put a lid on it. Throw out any left over that you have.
Deskunker
1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
1 teaspoon liquid soap
I would love to hear from anybody that has used the third method to see if it works or not.
