Officials seek owners of rescued Labrador retriever

LAKE CONROE – Lady Luck was with a yellow Labrador retriever rescued from Lake Conroe last week. Local law enforcement officials hope that good fortune continues and they are able to return the animal to its owner.

Officers with Constable Don Chumley’s Precinct 1 Marine Division, responding to resident calls in the Diamond Head area about a dog in Lake Conroe, were able to save the 8- to 10-month-old Labrador retriever after the animal had spent nearly four hours in the water last Thursday.
“It took a while to find the animal since only the head was above water,” said Lt. Bryan DuBose, who, along with Deputy Wayne McCaffrey, rescued the animal. “She was distressed, exhausted and dehydrated.”
Unable to exit the lake because of bulkheading, the animal had dog-paddled for several hours. When the rescue boat arrived, the dog was standing on its back feet holding its head above more than three feet of water.
“We’re fortunate to have several K-9 certified handlers on staff,” said DuBose. “We were able to warm and re-hydrate the dog throughout the night and then have her checked out by a vet.”
