Tips to Give Your Dogs Pills

Labrador Retriever Blog | October 22nd, 2008

I was reading a story about how hard it is to give your labrador retriever of dog pills. If any of you have tried it you can understand how difficult a task this can be. Your dog is no dummy and they can probably sniff out a pill or medication easier than some might think and much like us some of them just don’t like taking their medicine.

Remember to always check to make you are giving your dog the right medicine and proper dosage. The last thing you want to do is give your pet the wrong pill like a diet pill or caffeine pill. The dosage is really important as well. Some dogs are smaller than others and using the wrong dosage can be quite hazardous to them.

As I previously mentioned, dogs are pretty darn smart and can sniff out a pill hidden in their regular or daily food. Also by hiding a pill in their regular food you might give them an aversion to their food if they think something is going to be hidden in it. Instead use a treat that you can hide it in. Peanut butter or a banana will do the trick.

Don’t give it to them at the same time in the same place with the same snack. They might catch onto your plans and then associate those three things with taking something they don’t like. It sounds silly but believe me it happens.

Make sure they don’t hide the pill in their cheeks, much like you see a child do. If they don’t swallow it or if they spit it out (which Cooper has done) then you are going to have to put in their mouth and hold the dogs mouth closed until they swallow. Remember to be gentle and praising though. You don’t want to make the experience a bad one.

If all goes well or even if you had a tough time perhaps give them another treat and praise them for being good. Like training I am sure you know that this can go a long way.
